MotherTree Projects
In the beginning…In the winter of 2005, I was having “martini night” with my friend and fellow actor, Jan Filips, swapping stories of life in the theatre. He told me of the success his friend Shelley Thompson, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, had with a show she had directed called, Because I’m Your Mother, That’s Why! It was performed and written by a newly formed theatre company called The Women of Wolfville (W.O.W.). It occurred to me that my home town, Uxbridge, Ontario, would be an ideal place for such a project. In case this was just a momentary thought, the Universe intervened to hit me over the head, cementing the idea firmly. Just as I was telling Jan that I would love to do something similar, Shelley phoned him “just to say hi.” He handed me the phone and as I listened to her enthusiasm about the success of their show, I knew without a doubt there was going to be a similar project in Uxbridge.
MotherTree Projects is the company I founded in 2006 with the creation of the successful show mounted one year later - The M.O.M. Project (Musings on Motherhood). In 2008, The AhMen Project was performed in Uxbridge. In 2009, The W.I.T. Project was created in Orillia, Ontario.
Communities of women (so far) come together to write their personal stories about a certain subject. The stories are compiled into play form, then performed by the writers.
The MotherTree image comes from the Sequoia or Redwood trees in California. In extreme heat or stress, the giant mother tree, to survive, will create a family circle of trees (a “fairy ring”) from its burls. The family of trees all have the same DNA as the mother tree. The native culture sees the space inside the circle as sacred. From the fire of their experiences, and in producing such a transformational performance, a sacred community of women has been created.
